Asse in mei 1940
Toen Duitsland op 10 mei 1940 België binnenviel werd de eerste verdedigingslijn (met onder andere Eben Emael en het Albertkanaal) al snel overrompeld. Daarom werd op 11 mei besloten omde Belgische troepen terug te trekken tot aan de tweede verdedigingslijn (Koninghooikt – Waver). Het gedeelte tussen Leuven en Waver werd door het ons ter hulp gesnelde Britse BEF verdedigd, Frankrijk kwam ons helpen tussen Waver en Namen en in de Ardennen. Op 15 mei slaagden de Duitsers er evenwel in het front in de Belgische en Franse Ardennen te doorbreken. Door de bres nabij Sedan rukten de Duitse tank divisies op in de richting van het Kanaal. De geallieerde troepen dreigden omsingeld te worden… Om dit te voorkomen trok het Belgisch leger gedurende drie opeenvolgende nachten terug: eerst achter het kanaal van Willebroek, vervolgens achter het Denderkanaal en tenslotte achter de Schelde en het Kanaal Gent-Terneuzen. Door deze bewegingen vielen Leuven, Brussel, Mechelen en Antwerpen in Duitse handen. Om de Belgische terugtocht naar de Dender te beschermen, kreeg een Britse achterhoede de opdracht om het gebied Asse-Merchtem te verdedigen tot 8 uur in de morgen van 18 mei. De terugtrekking van de Britten (15e – 19e Huzaren) ging van Brussegem over Kobbegem ,Walfergem en Asse. In Asse werden de Britten aangevallen door een Duitse pantsereenheid. Het gevolg van deze aanval was een tiental vernielde Britse tanks, die door de Wehrmachtsoldaten graag gefotografeerd werden.

De Britten kwamen Asse binnen vanuit Walfergem, wellicht via de Brusselse Steenweg. Bij het binnenkomen van Asse passeren ze langs het station, waar ze door de Duitse pantsers onder vuur genomen worden. Op het plein voor het station blijven een aantal tanks en carriers verlaten achter:

De Britten moeten zich terugtrekken via de Stationsstraat, en laten ook hier een aantal tanks en carriers achter:

Volgende foto's zijn zeker en vast ook in Asse genomen. Twee keer dezelfde tank, de tank kan verplaatst zijn tussen het maken van beide foto's... Maar: wie herkent de achtergrond? Welke straat is dit? Herkent iemand de Citroën - garage?
